DIY Baby Wipe Spray

Posted by Jenny

During these unprecedented times, baby wipes have disappeared from store shelves. We buy our wipes online and currently are all out of stock! Well, all you gotta do is look at the label on your store bought wipes and see the first ingredient is WATER! Got that! Next ingredient is usually a soap. Got that! And great baby wipes have some type of oil to replenish baby’s sensitive skin! Got that! So, let’s make our own!

Currently, there are tons of DIY wipe recipes circulating and a lot of them are using a very popular dish soap!!! I won’t name any names! Not so good! Yes, do what you gotta do, but make sure that you watch out for sensitivities since those soaps have many harsh chemicals in them…even the “baby soaps.”

Ingredients

1 Cup of Water

1 Teaspoon of Liquid Castile Soap

1 Teaspoon of Jojoba Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil

Instructions

1. Measure water and pour into a clean spray bottle or container.

2. Add soap and your choice of oil.

3. Stir it up and add to a spray bottle or container of your choice.

To use just spray onto a cloth wipe or paper towel and wipe as normal. When using a cloth wipe you will notice a significant difference on how effective it is versus any other material.

Function of Ingredients

Water helps cleanse the skin and remove whatever you are trying to get off of skin. Ok, I’ll say it! It helps remove the poop off the skin. Water must also be used to dilute the liquid castile soap.

Liquid Castile soap is our solvent and cleaning agent. It acts a bridge to help mix the water and oil since we know water and oil will separate. You will still see some separation. Just give it a little shake.

Jojoba oil is preferred because it is non greasy. It will not leave a greasy residue on your skin. It also closely matches the natural oil our body produces called sebum.

If you don’t have fractionated coconut oil you will need to melt it first. A spray bottle will not work as efficient. It will probably clog when the coconut oil solidifies. Fractionated coconut oil is oil that does not solidify and stays in a liquid form. Almond oil would work great!

Essential oils could be added such as lavender. I chose to keep it simple.

This solution works great with cloth wipes. You can use whatever you have on hand like baby wash cloths, old wash rags, baby onesies that are too small can be cut up as well as some of your own clothes you don’t wear anymore.

If you wanted something more disposable this solution would work with paper towels. If you use a container to hold your wipes, don’t store it for more than a few days as there is no preservative and water makes it possible for bacterial growth. These are the spray bottles I use for all my products.

Ingredients to Avoid/ Check the Label

“Fragrance” commonly found in all home and personal care products is a way manufacturers can hide over 100 ingredients under 1 name! If it doesn’t list out what they use for their fragrance, put that sucker back on the shelf! Fragrances can cause allergies, respiratory effects, and skin irritation. Fragrance on labels are considered a trade secret so they don’t have to tell us what’s in it! Shhh!

Parabens such as isobutylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, and methylparaben can all be found in some baby wipes. Parabens can cause reproductive harm, endocrine disruption, immunotoxicity, and allergies.
