DIY Dish Soap

Posted by Jenny

Good dish soap is essential to any smooth running kitchen. After switching from a popular toxic brand to a more natural store bought brand, I thought to myself If I can make laundry soap (check out my post on that here) why not dish soap?

It is too easy! A little measuring, drop in some essentials oils, and you have natural dish soap that cleans fairly well. Takes just a couple of minutes.

Ingredients

1/4 Cup of Liquid Castile Soap

10 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil

5-10 Drops of Orange Essential Oil (you can omit the essential oils and still have an effective dish soap)

Fill the rest of your dispenser with water

Instructions

1. Measure out your liquid castile soap and pour into your glass dispenser.

2. Add lemon and orange essential oils, and water.

3. Shake gently and you’re ready to start your dishes…oh, GREAT!

This liquid castile soap works great. And this soap can be used for a DIY Hand Soap recipe! I use the unscented version. If using a scented version just omit some of the essential oils above.

This liquid castile soap is super popular and sold in a lot of stores. This one is unscented.

You can start with less essential oils and see how it works for you. If you feel like you are needing to scrub extra hard go ahead and add in more castile soap.

If you have super baked on gunk, you can sprinkle on some baking soda to add some scouring power.

You could definitely use all different essential oils than what is listed above but if you are new to essential oils these are a great start.

Function of Ingredients

Lemon essential oil is purifying and it is also acidic so it helps naturally clean your dishes.

Orange essential is a natural degreaser. It really cuts through grease build up.

This is the glass soap dispenser I used and loved. It held up fine and looks so pretty by the kitchen sink.

BUT now I’m trying out these foaming soap dispenser lids and I love em! I feel like I waste less soap this way. These lids work on regular mouth mason jars.

I try to use the same essential oils for different recipes so that it is cost effective for our family.

Ingredients to Avoid/ Check Your Label

“Fragrance” commonly found in all home and personal care products is a way manufacturers can hide over 100 ingredients under 1 name! If it doesn’t list out what they use for their fragrance, put that sucker back on the shelf and move on! Fragrances can cause allergies, respiratory effects, and skin irritation.

FD&C Blue 1 is a blue dye that is used in popular dish soaps. It can cause skin allergies and irritation.

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent that was used in soaps and other personal care products until it was recently banned. Some companies have reformulated their products to exclude triclosan or have simply replaced it with a similar agent like triclocarban. Triclosan can cause some serious side effects like thyroid disfunction, hormone imbalance, and a weakened immune system.

Try out the recipe and let me know how it works for you or let me know what combinations you have tried.

Update

Since realizing that I may have been overusing essential oils, I have omitted them from my home and DIY’s. I only use them in an emergency situation. I believe that they are very powerful, but they don’t belong in EVERY single product in our home. All of my DIY’s that include essential oils can be made without them and still work just fine.
