DIY Furniture Polish

Posted by Jenny

I have repurposed most of the furniture in my home. I love DIY furniture painting projects like everything else! I always have a few (lots and lots) unfinished furniture projects. But when I finally finish my projects and decorate them all cute after a few days there are tiny little fingerprints, spilled food and drinks, and DUST all over them! Since my girls come in contact with these surfaces and may place their snacks on them I don’t want to use chemicals! This recipe is all natural, conditions furniture, and cleans very well. As always just takes a couples minutes to make.

Ingredients

1/2 Cup of Cleaning Vinegar

2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil or Jojoba Oil

10 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil

10 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (you can omit the essential oils all together and still have an effective polish)

Fill the rest of your spray bottle with water

These glass bottles are perfect for using any essential oil recipes. Also a great way to reduce plastic. Essential oils can break down plastics.

Instructions

1. Measure the cleaning vinegar and pour into your spray bottle.

2. Add the olive or jojoba oil, essential oils, and water.

3. Gently shake it up and it’s ready to make your furniture shiny and clean.

Function of Ingredients

Vinegar is a natural, multipurpose cleaning agent. It will easily remove dirt and dust.

Olive oil will provide your finished wood with a layer of protection and moisture. If you have Jojoba oil on hand you can use that instead.

Lemon oil not only cleans your wood surfaces but it also helps protect the wood and makes it shiny.

I use peppermint oil because it also has antibacterial properties. You could use any other essential oil.

And don’t forget some microfiber towels that can be used in the kitchen as well. Also helps reduce paper waste. Bright colors are pretty but the darker colors hide stains better. Use different colors for different rooms in your home. Keep the ones for your bathrooms separate from the ones you use in your kitchen.

Ingredients to Avoid/ Check Your label

“Fragrance” commonly found in all home and personal care products is a way manufacturers can hide over 100 ingredients under 1 name! If it doesn’t list out what they use for their fragrance, don’t use it! Fragrances can cause allergies, respiratory effects, and skin irritation. Fragrance on labels are considered a trade secret so they don’t have to tell us what’s in it!

Naphtha is an ingredient in commercial furniture polish. It is used as a solvent to form a solution for cleaning. It is linked to damaging DNA, which is cancer causing, skin irritation and allergies.
