DIY Hand Soap

Posted by Jenny

Can’t stress enough the importance of hand washing to help keep you healthy. My 3 year old is currently obsessed with washing her hands. I mean she washes her hands every 20 minutes for about 5 minutes. It’s a phase I’m happy about. Hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent harmful bacteria and other microorganisms from entering our bodies and making us sick. I already make a dish soap (check that out here) so why not use that for our hands? It is too harsh for our skin. After all the dish soap I have created is meant to deep clean my dishes and get rid of all the oily residue. I do not want to strip away my hands natural oils and not replenish it. So, I suggest a hand soap that has the added benefit of bringing back some moisture to your skin. Just like all my other DIY recipes, this one takes just a couple of minutes to make.

Ingredients

1/4 Cup of Liquid Castile Soap

1 Tablespoon of Jojoba Oil

Fill the rest of your dispenser with water

Instructions

1. Measure and pour your liquid castile soap in your dispenser.

2. Measure and add your jojoba oil.

3. Fill the rest of your dispenser with water and gently shake it up.

Function of Ingredients

I like this liquid castile soap. NO PALM OIL! Save trees, save yourself! Liquid castile soap is an all natural concentrated soap. A little foes a long way. It must always be diluted. I use the unscented version.

This soap is the popular option. It can also be found in some grocery stores.

I like jojoba oil for any recipe that involves our skin, hair, or nails. Jojoba oil closely matches the natural oil our skin produces called sebum. When we have dry hands or dry skin and need to add moisture it’s best to add an oil that is not to thick and greasy. Who likes that heavy residue feel? Not me!

I try to always use organic products especially when it comes to oils. I do not want to use oils that have been contaminated with pesticides. I also do not want to use oils that are mixed with synthetic fillers or fragrances. It defeats the whole purpose of making my own products. Organic does come with a higher price tag but often they have unmatched benefits and sourced responsibly.

I love these mason jar foaming soap dispensers. Great for bathrooms and kitchens! They make measuring easy.

Hands feel so soft after washing. You can make it as strong as you want. For a mild soap add less soap. For a stronger soap, instead of 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap add 1/2 of a cup.

Ingredients to Avoid/ Check Your Label

“Fragrance” commonly found in all home and personal care products is a way manufacturers can hide over 100 ingredients under 1 name! If it doesn’t list out what they use for their fragrance, put that sucker back on the shelf and move on! Fragrances can cause allergies, respiratory effects, and skin irritation. Fragrance on labels are considered a trade secret so they don’t have to tell us what’s in it! Shhh! Excuse me?

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent that was used in soaps and other personal care products until it was recently banned. Some companies have reformulated their products to exclude triclosan or have simply replaced it with a similar agent like triclocarban. Triclosan can cause some serious side effects like thyroid disfunction, hormone imbalance, and a weakened immune system.

Recently, there isn’t enough evidence that “antibacterial” hand soaps are any more effective than plain soap and water. In fact, they may have been doing us more harm than anything else.

Methylisothiazolinone is a common preservative found in lots of liquid products like hand soap, dish soap, shampoo, body wash, facial cleansers, and tons more! That doesn’t make it safe. It is banned in some countries. It is linked to allergies, lung toxicity, and possible neurotoxicity. This toxic ingredient should not come in contact with skin.
