DIY Rolling Craft Cart

Posted by Jenny

I had been looking for a way to store our girl’s crafts supplies for months. I thought of using the same cubbies we have in our playroom but those are plain… not cute and they are not mobile. I wanted something on wheels that I could move around depending on where we were doing projects. I really considered those cute little metal carts with wheels (they come in aqua) but I would at least need three of them to store our supplies. We are a homeschooling family so we have a lot stuff. We also needed a project that would not take long to make. Crates! I’ve seen them stacked on each other in closets or corners for storage why not add some wheels? Bam! The rolling wood crate craft cart! I might just have to convince the husband to make a couple more of these for the playroom!

Supplies

6 large wood crates

1 1 in. common board, cut into 2 pieces

4 Casters with brakes

Screws

Fine Grit Sand Paper/ Block

Wood Stain or Paint and Sealer

Instructions

We started by sanding the crates since these were unfinished and really rough. Splinters! Ouch! Make sure to wipe them down.

We secured the common board to 3 crates and then added the other 3 crates on top.

We added the second board and added the casters.

We stained it with 1 coat. I thought of soooo many ideas of different colors I could use. I was thinking AQUA, or rainbow (each crate a different color), or gray. I love chalk paint but I wanted something easy.

We sealed it with a natural non- toxic sealer.

We absolutely love it! Shout out to my husband!

The original plan was to use wood glue and he was like “NO!” Thank Goodness! If you prefer, you could use wood glue but in my opinion you would still need some nails to secure the crates.

Tip: The crates I purchased had a sticker on them and when I removed the sticker it left that annoying residue on the crate. I suggest don’t even bother with it and flip the crates so that the residue is on the inside! Easy!

I love using clear bins. It makes it so easy to see everything.

Definitely going to need a few more of these!
