DIY Weather Sensory Bottles

Posted by Jenny

Get ready to SHAKE things up!

We are starting our weather section and I thought this activity would be a great way to get the kids excited about learning. This activity was very easy to put together. We had most things already except for the sensory bottles. My four year old was able to pour the water and add all the small elements with close to no help. This activity took a little over an hour from start to finish. They have been playing with the bottles for over 2 hours now. My 2 year old loves turning the bottles upside down. I just love her reaction. I see these bottles getting lots of use. WIN!

Here’s a list of supplies you will need:

7 Sensory Bottles

Water

Blue Food Coloring/ Spirulina

Cotton Balls

Leaves

Blue Glitter

Snowflake Glitter

Thunderbolts

Yellow Pom Pom

Snowflakes

White/ Pearl Beads

Make your own labels for extra learning fun!

How To:

Gather all supplies.

Start mixing water and food coloring/ spirulina to desired color.

Add water to bottles and add in the elements.

Fill up with water. Leave a little room so things can move around.

You may use a hot glue gun or tape to seal the bottles so they can’t be opened and poured all over the place!

I gathered all the supplies, put them in a pile and then had my 4 year old start to get things together. I would ask her questions like, “what do you think we could use for clouds?” She would then grab the cotton balls and put them next to the cloudy label. We did this for all the bottles until they were all lined up ready to be filled. She needed almost no help to fill up the bottles. The only thing I took charge of was the mixing of the water with the food coloring/ spirulina. A little bit goes a long way. For the sunny bottle, we added almost no food coloring and for the storm bottle we added a bit more.

I cut out the thunderbolts using foam sheets.

For the hail, I used pearl beads. You could also use things like clear pebbles, white rocks, or marbles. For the leaves, we had some left over from another project. I try to always use stuff we already have…get creative.

I plan to use these daily. When we start our school day, we review what day it is, what season it is, and what the weather is like. These bottles will come in handy.

I printed out some pictures to match the bottles that could be used to play a matching game. You could also just stick the pictures to the bottles or whatever you like.

The sensory bottles are from Michael’s. The rest of the supplies are from stores like Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, Amazon, and the Dollar Store.

Which bottles are you going to be making?
