Learning Boards

Posted by Jenny

We decided when our first daughter was born she would be homeschooled. I wanted to get a good start on her learning animals, letters, numbers, and shapes. When she was 6 months old, we started using flash cards and I feel like those dramatically increased the number of words she was learning. I wanted to create an at home preschool setting for her. We use our breakfast nook since our playroom has carpet and crafts and carpet don’t mix!

I purchased some cork boards, push pins, and some really cute cut out letters. We already had the flash cards.

I switch out the flash cards every week. Sometimes, she will take a little longer with a card so I may not switch it out and just leave it another week. Go at your child’s pace. Older children might have to have new flash cards every few days! Most of the time I try to match everything up like below for animal there is a seal. Seal starts with the letter “S” and the seal happens to be blue so that weeks color is blue.

I used glue dots to adhere my cut out letters to my board but a hot glue gun would work too as the cut out letters are thick. You could use a strong tape, push pins, or even staple the cut outs. Less commitment if you staple them.

I chose to have a section for an animal, color, letter, word, shape, and number. You could definitely customize it to your child’s needs. As my daughter grows, I’d like to include another board for seasons, months, and days. You could make a math board or science board maybe even a language board!

We might need more wall space!

The size I used for the cork boards are 23 by 35 like the ones below.

These are super cute cut out letters that are very easy to work with. They have multiple designs.

These flash cards are awesome! They include so much like colors, shapes, and numbers. If you checked out my other posts, you’ll notice I use these flash cards for my daughter’s activity boxes!

Below is another cute DIY mini project! I used a small cork board and felt squares. I used a hot glue gun to glue the felt squares. I used push pins to stick them on the cork board. I chose rainbow colored popsicle sticks to help my toddler color sort and count! You can remove the felt squares and use your cork board for other activities.

Use the extra felt for so many other projects! I used extra felt for my color section!

Rainbow popsicle sticks are so versatile. We use them for a lot of activities!

I’d love to see what boards you have made!
